Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California, located southeast of downtown Los Angeles at the base of the Puente Hills. The city is known for its historic neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, and strong educational heritage. Although it is part of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, Whittier has a distinct identity shaped by its historic downtown, residential character, and surrounding hills. Its location provides convenient access to both urban attractions and nearby parks, making it an important residential and cultural community in Southern California.

The culture of Whittier reflects its Quaker origins, diverse population, and long history as an educational center. The city is named after the American poet John Greenleaf Whittier, although he never visited the area. Whittier College has played a significant role in the community, contributing to the city’s academic and cultural life. Uptown Whittier serves as the city's historic heart, featuring preserved buildings, independent shops, restaurants, theaters, and public events that bring residents together throughout the year.

Whittier offers a variety of attractions that highlight both its history and natural surroundings. The Whittier Greenway Trail follows a former railway corridor and provides a popular route for walking and cycling. The Whittier Museum presents exhibits on local history, while the nearby Puente Hills Preserve offers hiking trails with views across the Los Angeles Basin. Pio Pico State Historic Park preserves the former home of Pío Pico, the last governor of Alta California under Mexican rule. These sites showcase the city's connections to California's cultural and historical development.
